Middle School Attendance Guidelines
The Ankeny Board of Education has established policy regarding attendance and truancy.
The following rules will apply to all middle school students concerning absences and tardiness.
- Students late to school less than 60 minutes will be counted tardy. Students late to school 60 or more minutes will be counted absent. The absence may be excused or unexcused depending on the conditions.
- For the purpose of student records, student absences will be recorded in the minimum of half-day increments. A student absent from class at least one half of the available class periods in the morning or in the afternoon will be counted absent one half day. A student absent more than one half the periods in both the morning and afternoon will be counted absent one full day.
- The first two unexcused absences referred to the office will each result in 60 minutes of office detention.
- On the third unexcused absence of each semester referred to the office, the student will be assigned Extended Tuesday Detention.
- The fourth and fifth unexcused absences referred to the office will each result in
- 90 minutes of office detention.
- On the sixth unexcused absence of each semester referred to the office, the student will be assigned Extended Tuesday Detention. A meeting must be held with a student support team which could include: student, parent, principal, guidance counselor, nurse, school outreach coordinator, and truancy officer.
